Adulis Ethiopian Art was born from a deep passion for preserving and promoting Ethiopia’s artistic legacy. Founded by Dejene Hodes, a dedicated curator and cultural advocate, the platform was established with the vision of bringing Ethiopian art to a global audience while supporting local artists and the unique stories their works represent.
Our journey began with a simple yet profound goal: to highlight the cultural richness of Ethiopia through its art. From ancient traditions such as religious iconography and intricate cross designs to modern abstract expressions, Adulis Ethiopian Art serves as a bridge between the country’s
deep-rooted history and its evolving artistic future.
Over time, we have expanded our collection to include a wide array of art forms, featuring both renowned masters and emerging artists. Each piece in our collection reflects Ethiopia’s historical significance and contemporary voice, offering insight into the country’s dynamic cultural narrative.
As we continue to grow, our commitment remains the same: to share the beauty, depth, and diversity of Ethiopian art with the world, fostering a deeper appreciation for its cultural significance and artistic innovation.
Born in rural Ethiopia, the founder of Adulis Ethiopian Art faced significant challenges from the start. Growing up without electricity or running water, he was raised by his single mother and grandmother. Life was simple, filled with the joys of nature, but everything changed at age five when he was diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis. Shortly after, he tragically lost both his mother and grandmother, leaving him to move between relatives in search of care and stability.
Eventually, he found himself in Addis Ababa, where his aunt, in a desperate situation, left him at a church, hoping for help. Living outside the church and relying on the kindness of strangers, his life took a turn when an American doctor adopted him and provided the medical care he needed. A life-changing surgery in 2002 allowed him to begin a new chapter, leading to his eventual return to Ethiopia, where he completed his education.
Now the founder of Adulis Ethiopian Art, his personal journey fuels his passion for promoting Ethiopian culture and art on a global stage. Having overcome great adversity, he is dedicated to building businesses that create opportunities for Ethiopian artists and positively impact the local economy.
