Walk the floor at Basel. Frieze. The Armory Show. Count the Ethiopian names on the wall labels. You'll run out of names before you run out of fingers.

Ethiopian craftsmanship reached Rome, Persia, and India two thousand years ago, out of the port of Adulis, and none of those empires questioned the quality. The work was always good enough. What disappeared was the road.

Nobody has put the right piece in front of the right person. We do. Every month, our documentary series, Gift of Ethiopia, follows us into a working studio in Addis Ababa. You meet the artist first. Then you meet the work.

Ethiopia has had painters of that caliber for centuries. What it lacked was patrons paying attention at that scale.

Five hundred years ago, the Medici funded Florence's painters. Botticelli, Michelangelo, da Vinci — talent alone didn't build the Renaissance. Patrons willing to pay for the studio, the marble, and the years it takes to get good did.

Adulis carried Aksum's gold, ivory, and craftsmanship to Rome, Persia, and India for six hundred years, until the trade routes shifted and the port went quiet. The name is open for business again. This time the cargo is paintings — and soon, a studio in Addis Ababa where the next generation of Ethiopian artists gets what Florence's painters got: a place to work, and create the next wonder of the world.

Right now, that's ten pieces a month from Ethiopia's best working artists, with a camera in the room documenting the discovery as it happens, theirs and ours. In a few months, we start building a collection of our own — real partnership with the artists: contracts, representation, a stake in what happens to the work next.

Once that collection is strong enough to travel, it travels: a gallery tour through the cities where this conversation actually happens, real rooms, real people, and dinners for the collectors who were here before any of it was proven.

The art is already extraordinary. We're building the bridge, one month at a time.

Ask a collector who passed on Basquiat before 1981. Ask one who waited on Kusama before the market caught up. Nobody says it was a bad idea to wait. They just don't bring it up.

Ethiopian art is standing exactly where those moments stood: three thousand years of tradition, a handful of people actually paying attention, and a market that hasn't priced it correctly yet. Print forty-seven of a hundred does not come back once it's gone.

Ten years from now, being early will look obvious. It always does, in hindsight. The only time it doesn't feel obvious is right now.
