The newly unveiled Council of the Eternal Guardians amplifies the meditation Wendwesen Kebede Abera began with Sun Above the Ancestors. Where the earlier work convened the ancestors, this one convenes their guardians — masked figures who hold the line between memory and forgetting.
The Composition
Dominated by a central figure crowned with expansive golden horns and a luminous sun-like orb, the painting pulses with a palette of deep blues, fiery oranges, and earthy reds. Surrounding this central form, a council of stylized masks — adorned with geometric motifs and vibrant hues — convenes. Their expressions are both solemn and commanding.
Crows perch atop the composition, their black silhouettes contrasting with an azure background dotted with circular forms — possibly celestial bodies, possibly ancestral eyes. Vertical and diagonal lines create a rhythmic structure, guiding the viewer through a narrative of unity and resistance.
Technique and Texture
Wendwesen’s layered application of paint adds depth. The raised textures in the horned figure’s adornments suggest a tangible connection to ancient regalia — a nod to the bas-relief traditions of Ethiopian church art, pushed into modernist territory.
The radial composition around the central figure is balanced by the grounded presence of the surrounding masks. It is a portrait of communal strength.
Together, a Pair
Where Sun Above the Ancestors looks upward — celestial, cosmic, remembering — Council of the Eternal Guardians looks outward, toward assembly and protection. Read together, the two paintings form a single conversation: the ancestors we remember, and the guardians who remember for us.
Both works ask the same question in different registers: what does it mean to keep faith with the past?
Like its companion, Council of the Eternal Guardians is being released in one hundred hand-signed prints through Adulis. Each is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity and symbolic documentation. Each is an invitation to participate in a movement to elevate Ethiopian art globally.
